As a mom of 3 young girls it’s my job to make sure they have the confidence they need to handle any situation. I want to give my little Special Kayes everything they need to have rock solid self esteem. Yes, as a mom I want to protect them, but it’s also my job to teach and show them how to develop their own style and confidence. I talk to them about beauty, about advertisements and about the media world that Mommy works in. We dissect ads all the time on TV, radio and online.
My oldest daughter is following in my footsteps. She has her own TV show Make it Big Make it Small on the Makeful Network. My advice to her was no one should tell you how to wear your clothes, how to cut or dye your hair and, when you’re older, how to wear your makeup. You do you. You’re the best at it and no one should try and change it.
As a TV and radio personality I am judged all the time. When I got my very first job in television my producer invited me to a hair salon to get a “refresh”. I thought I was getting a cut and maybe a few fun highlights. Nope, the producer told the stylist to dye my hair completely blonde. I looked at her in complete shock and I said NO, I’m not doing it. She said then you’re NOT going to be on TV. The producer left the salon and I stuck around with the stylist and, yeah, cried for a moment then decided right there that no one was going to tell me how to wear my hair. Did I lose the gig. Yup. Do I regret not dying my hair? Nope. I’m me and no one is going to tell me how to wear my hair. I have curly brown hair. I like to straighten it. I like to wear it curly. I like putting highlights in it and yeah I like doing the “ombre” thing sometimes….but that’s my choice. If I change the colour it will be my choice!
Self Esteem is important and I want to make sure my children have enough self esteem to make the right choice in life and to handle situations on their own. I was happy to come across the Dove Self Esteem program . It’s for young girls age 7-17. Check out at selfesteem.dove.ca for more about the program.
Also, with the Olympics days away see what Dove is doing at Dove Have Your Say. They are showcasing what the media is saying about the athletes . Every day the media judges athletes on their looks and not their achievements. Follow along during the Olympics.
